Gabon school term postponed

Some students and pupils in Gabon are enjoying an extended vacation. But, not everyone is happy about the extension.

The opening of the school term has been postponed due to post election violence in the country.

The situation has put parents and students on edge as they fear the school calender will further be disrupted due to the up coming African Cup of Nations.

A standoff between opposition-supporting unions and the government is mainly to blame for the situation.

Listen I spent 3 months in jail. Contrary to what they could have wished, I came out strong. with the zeal to continue the fight.Classes will not start in all schools and universities if the leaders are not freed”, said Jean-Remy Yama, President of the National Union of Teachers and Researchers.

Minister of Education, Florentin Moussavou said he wants, ‘‘the school year to unfold in a good manner and I wish that our compatriots who are part of this movement would understand there is a difference between this request and the education reality.”

Public schools should have reopened on October 1 to receive primary and secondary school pupils.
